I Believe: Expressions of Faith Podcast

Below is an honest resource, a starting point, if you will, of core beliefs that I hold as  Christian Latter-day Saint (“Mormon”) woman. This is by no means exhaustive as truth is not exhaustive, but represents some essential truths in which I believe.  I’d love to engage and befriend those of all faiths, so please join in the conversation.  I’ve posted these because they were part of an original pre-election podcast when there was notable interest (which lingers today) in what Mitt Romney believes and what “Mormonism”–the doctrines of The Church of Jesus Christ–represent.  As a member of his shared Christ-centered, Christ-worshipping faith, I enumerated some of these in succinct fashion below.Karen Mormon

Okay, so here are 35 points reflecting what I believe….

▪   I believe that Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ are separate and real beings, with tangible glorified bodies, and that the Holy Ghost is a spirit personage who bears witness of them and all truth.

▪    I believe that Jesus Christ is my personal Savior and Savior of the world, that His atonement (suffering for our sins, mistakes, infirmities, and pains unto death) and His resurrection are literal and real; that He is not “just” a man, but born of a Heavenly Being–our Father in Heaven– and an earthly being, Mary.

▪    I believe that as we accept His sacrifice and grace and follow Him and His path, we can be saved and exalted. To be exalted is to live the kind of life that He and the Father live and be in their presence, and with redeemed loved ones forever.

▪   I believe that Jesus Christ will come again as King of Kings, and is a vested Advocate in my life and our lives, giving us grace–or enabling power through His atonement– as we strive to obey Him.

BibleGod6Quote▪    I believe that the gospel of Jesus Christ has been restored to the earth in its fulness.  I believe that there was a loss of truth and of God’s authority to act in His behalf after the death of the Savior and the apostles, and that while noble Reformers strove to reconstruct and piece back together original truths Jesus taught, that Reformation was insufficient to bring back both all truth and to restore of itself the power and authority to act in His name.

▪    I believe that what was required to restore the pure unadulterated truths of the Savior and His power and authority,  as was predicted in scripture, was a “restoration.” This restoration started in 1820, through Joseph Smith, who prayed to know where such truth and God’s authority to administer the gospel existed.

▪   I believe that we existed before we existed before this life as spirit children of God. I believe that there are 3 parts or phases of our existence: a pre-mortal, mortal, and post-mortal or eternal life.

▪   I believe that a hunger for our eternal home, for our purpose, for a personal relationship with God and Jesus Christ, lies within each of us.  I believe that our destiny is divine, should we seek God and find Him and the path back to Him.

▪    I believe we are both body and spirit, and that blend constitutes our soul.

▪   I believe our spirit can inherently receive truth since it comes to us by the Holy Spirit who speaks to our spirit.

▪   I believe that our body and spirit separate at death, but the spirit lives on and will be reunited with a perfect immortal body in the resurrection.

▪   I believe that resurrection is free for all, but that the highest degree of glory, as described by the Apostle Paul, or exaltation is reserved for those who willingly adhere to ordinances or covenant-making processes. The most common of these ordinances are baptism, and laying on of hands for the gift of the Holy Ghost, but there are additional ordinances that endow us with power and draw us nearer and nearer to God.

▪    I believe that the highest ordinances of the gospel of Jesus Christ are those performed in holy temples (some may know them as LDS Temples or Mormon temples). This includes the ordinance of eternal marriage. I believe family relationships are intended to last forever and not just until death.

▪    I believe in The Holy Bible, The Book of Mormon, the Doctrine and Covenants, and The Pearl of Great Price, all holy books of God’s instructions, ancient and modern scripture inspired and recorded as teachings from a loving God, and handbook of instruction for each of us personally in our day.

▪   I believe that the heavens are not silent, that a perfect Heavenly Father and Mother exist and that God, our Father, and His Son continue to speak to us and reveal their wills for our lives.  I believe that happiness comes as we are aligned to that divine will, and that their will is perfect and their design loving and good.

▪    I believe that there are living apostles on earth today!

▪    I believe that, as in ancient times, there are living prophets in our day, and that President Thomas S. Monson is the living prophet today whom God has ordained to be His mouthpiece to guide each of us and this generation.

▪    I believe that men and women are co-equal in God’s plan.  I believe that a matriarch and patriarch are equal partners within marriage, the family, community, and Church, with commensurate and complementary responsibilities and equal abilities to influence and build the kingdom of God, with equal access to a knowledge of God and every spiritual and gift and blessing He has to offer.

▪    I believe that the true value and nature of women and womanhood as well as woman’s divine organization has been restored to the earth.  The women’s organization is known as Relief Society and we believe it is the only “divinely made, divinely instituted and divinely ordained” organization of its kind in the world.

▪   I believe in the Ten Commandments.

▪   I believe in paying an honest and full tithe, or ten percent of our increase as well as other offerings to help the poor and the needy.

▪   I believe in striving for excellence and virtue in all things and believe in receiving as much education as we can in this life to help us to serve our families, friends, Church, communities, nation, and world.

▪   I believe in fidelity before and during marriage.

▪    I believe in taking the gospel of Jesus Christ to the world, as ordained by Him.  I believe the gospel of Jesus Christ is the solution to the world’s and to individual problems and pain and that the Savior’s atonement can heal and change anyone who comes unto Him in faith.

▪    I believe in not taking into our bodies things that would defile or harm them including alcohol, tobacco, drugs, stimulants. (You may hear this referred to as the Word of Wisdom.”

▪    I believe that suffering has a purpose and that it can have a sanctifying influence on us if we allow God to help us through it.   I believe we came here to earth to be tested and tried.

▪   I believe that moral agency–the ability to choose good from evil–is fundamental to God’s plan and must exist in order to for us to progress as individuals.

▪   I believe that Satan is real and that he chose to rebel against God’s plan for our eternal welfare and is a disembodied personage, not just a symbol of evil.

▪   I believe that The Savior has overcome and ultimately triumphed over all evil, and that the outcome of every difficulty will be worked for good as the landscape of our eternal lives unfold, as we accept Jesus Christ, and strive to follow Him.

▪    I believe that God the Father is inherently and totally good, perfect, just, loving, merciful, just, and true to His word and His promises or He would not be God.

▪    I believe evidences of God are everywhere to be found and that He is a rewarder and revealer of Himself to those who diligently seek to know Him.  I believe those who ask if He exists with pure intent and willingness to follow His will, will find Him, and feel His personal love guidance, and signature on their lives.

▪   I believe we are created in God’s image. I believe that God is personal, real, and close–the Savior likewise–and that they are neither fictional nor amorphous intelligences or optional Beings to consider.

▪   I believe each of us has an eternal gender and unique gifts and divine mission and destiny, and that each of us came to earth bringing with us some talents already developed before this life, and were prepared for our work and mission here.

▪   I believe that Jesus Christ is the Way, the Truth, and Life, and that He embodies all truth.  I do believe, though, that all who live according to the light they have will be given greater light or knowledge until they come to a fullness of truth, the fullness of the gospel of Jesus Christ.

While I’ve just shared beliefs I have in common with Mitt Romney, individual political leanings and decisions about candidates are up to each member as in this official Church statement:

▪           The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints does not endorse, promote or oppose political parties, candidates or platforms or attempt to direct its members as to which candidate or party they should vote for.  The Church does.encourage its members to play a role as responsible citizens in their communities, including becoming informed about issues and voting in elections.
