Here’s Karen:
God Has the Bigger Picture
Hi friends! Is your day dragging discouragement by its tail or is your upward glance only catching dark thunderclouds that you think will never pass…. is something eating at your peace or affecting your outlook and hope for the future? Does God really care? Is He there?
I hope to offer you, wherever I’m meeting you on your spiritual journey–and we’re all on one of some kind, some encouragement and perspective that I hope brings a measure of peace from God and not from me–
First a memory…
We lifted my eight-year old daughter, Talia and held her up over the retaining wall in the back yard where she glimpsed the world from a few feet higher than her usual vantage point, observing a creamsicle-colored full moon and the twinkling of many lights of a nearby development.
In retelling her experience, she remarked, “Wow, Mom! I gasped! I didn’t know it could look like that. I just wanted to stay there for an hour—! I felt her spirit capture the joy of “things as they really are” from a loftier perspective.
Perspective gives us patience, purpose, and a place for our emotions—even transforming them. I hope this message may begin to bring hope and encouragement for when life seems the most unstable or the thermometer of frustration and spiritual confusion is turned up high, the most refining work in our lives may be happening and there is a great design to unfold from the darkest phases of our progression. God is in control and has accounted for our agency and choices; He has a design for you, a hopeful future regardless of the past or present. Stick with me for a few.
I’d like to make suggestion and then show you something on screen from nature that illustrates this spiritual point and hope you’ll stick with me because this may change your very outlook and offer hope today.
Despair? Dreams Eluding You? Needing Faith, Hope?
I would like to suggest that when we are afraid or feel helpless to change our current situation or are in despair because life’s dreams seem to elude us or the options we envision for our life are not presenting themselves, that it may be because we are looking through a small bay window of the present, or understating what God can do beyond what has happened in our lives to ultimately bring us happiness.
He can design out of the raw materials of our lives something grander than we can see–whether in our moments of joy or in the prolonged tunnel of trial or present pixle of circumstance.
I testify that God is in charge and God has the bigger picture. His plan of happiness for all His children is in full sway and effect. The atonement is complete. The Savior will return to rule and reign. Our lives make sense in spite of appearances in an eternal perspective. God’s window is much larger than ours—to Him all things are present and the earth and our lives are all present before him. In the words of an ancient prophet: “For he knoweth all things and there is not anything save He knows it.”

Take a peek with me into the divine geometry of nature. All things, say Nephi and Alma, typify (that is, teach or denote) something about God. Now here is a stunning reality.
Did you know that within a leaf is the design of the whole tree? You see the branches and the tree’s design in miniature within each leaf. Well, step back wtih me and see something even more amazing–
What you’ll see and see rather quickly here is a zoom in of each section of that leaf. It looks like you’re looking at the leaf again, but you’ll be looking at a zoomed in portion of the leaf in which there is the same full design of the leaf, with slight variation. I’ll show it to you a few times while I comment on it.
This image is called a fractal; . We won’t get into mathematical technicalities here, but for now, observe what happens as we magnify just the small rectangular portion marked on the image.
When any section of this form is magnified, we see the same pattern in miniature with slight variations.
Zoom again, another self-similar design decorated by slightly different borders. Guess what! We could zoom in a billion times to magnify the detail and the same mini-replica would emerge with these subtle intricate changes. A design contained within the design. You may have seen something similar in a leaf.
I find a couple things magnificent and telling about this–first of all, the Master Designer knows what he’s doing–if He’ll do that for a leaf, what a greater design does he have for you, his very child, literal spirit child of His whom He loves more than you love yourself?
But secondly, what I find interesting is that right before a section of the leaf emerges into the design of a new leaf within it, if I were to hold the pattern, or fractal, still, you’d actually see an area of instability or disequilibrium. Right at the point where the new leaf is about to emerge in a more refined pattern, there is mathematically shown in this series of images known as the Mandelbrot series, a space where there is some confusion, if you will, some things that seem skiwampus–
SO when we feel the disequilibrium in our lives, just at the moment when things seem to be most confusing or most difficult or most challenging or least sense-making, against the backdrop of those very moments, you may be on the threshold of a breakthrough, a newer and better life image and God’s design can emerge, if you don’t quit and if you go to Him and seek his plan rather than kick against the pricks, which is then easy to do.
I want to witness to you that who we will become is in His hands will occur over time as we live a whole panorama of experiences that He knows will shape us as he has done so exquisitely in all of nature.
God’s plan is in full sway and effect; atonement is complete which it will make sense in spite of appearances and what we think is plan B may really be God’s plan A for our lives. He is overruling anything detrimental or deficient in our lives…
God and Jesus Christ work out their spiritual geometry in a way I don’t comprehend, but I do know that when their geometry is finished and they add, multiply, reduce, divide, subtract, that it creates in life a common denominator that equals out and promotes and creates our ultimate good and eternal happiness, should we seek to acknowledge His reality and follow Him.
Because God Is Sovereign
Because God is sovereign, does not mean we sit back and kick our feet up and fall asleep. He works through us and expects us to use our agency, to act in belief, to move forward by the power of His Spirit. He would have us not quit, persevere in our circumstances or work with depend on Him to change them–to do what He is bidding you to do, however lonely or challenging it may feel. He will encourage you each step.
Again, the Lord declares: “Ye cannot behold with your natural eyes, for the present time, the design of your God concerning those things which shall come hereafter” (Modern Revelation: Doctrine and Covenants 58:3). “It doth not yet appear what [you] shall be but we know that when Christ shall appear [you] shall be like him” (1 John 3:2).
God bless you in your spiritual journey. May you see beyond the pixel of the present trial to God’s purpose and plan for you as you seek HIm. We’re here to accompany you through that journey. Let us know how it’s going and how we can help.
