Christianity: What Is the Gospel of Jesus Christ? [Video & Transcript]
In today’s desert of doubt and disbelief, I’ll address here, for those honestly seeking, what the gospel of Jesus Christ actually is and why it’s important to consider seriously.
The Gospel of Jesus Christ: Plan for Our Development, Happiness & Salvation
Simply put, the gospel is the plan for your happiness and mine. It’s God’s perfect plan for the growth of His children—our whole spiritual, emotional, intellectual, eternal development as God’s children. Think of it—you have eternal potential and everything God has set in place is to lead you to become more than you are and that you can imagine you can become. The put-downs of this world are not of the gospel of Jesus Christ. However unloved you may have been, or how unlovable you feel you are, you are loved unconditionally and you have a hope and a future and a security in the gospel of Jesus Christ and in Him.
So, in short, the gospel is a system that allows us to reach our fullest potential and to return to God and loved ones forever. So, it actually includes all things both temporal and spiritual. Every truth, every law and power—whether on earth, in heaven, or throughout a boundless universe—all of these are part of the gospel of God. It includes all things created for our benefit. It is the system that saves men on this world and all of the worlds of the Lord’s creation.
In the fullest sense, the gospel of Jesus Christ is the plan of salvation and happiness, established by the Father, and which we ourselves joyfully approved in a pre-earth meeting, to enable his spirit children (Christ and each of us included) to advance and progress and become like Him.
It operates and is made possible by divine laws and through the atonement of Christ.
The Atonement of Jesus Christ: Central to the Gospel
For those who don’t know, the Atonement is Jesus’ standing-in for our sin and error in a supreme sacrifice of love and suffering which took place in a sacred garden and on the cross when He lived on earth. The Atonement is the divine ransom—the debt paid for our errors, sins, injustices caused by choice or heaped upon us in a fallen world. It’s what raises us from mortality to immortality, or, in other words, from physical and spiritual death to eternal life in beautiful conditions.
I witness that Jesus Christ is real and truly the Savior, who atoned for you and me, and who is resurrected and who wants to lift you up and give you new life in Him.
Change Is Possible through Jesus Christ
In fact, through His mediation or intervention or payment of our sin, His grace or power is made available to us. And the great news is that the plan and the Atonement which lies at the heart of it, provides the way and means our hearts are changed. We really can change! Not just cosmetically, but deeply.
Born innocent, we each fall into sin. God changes us through Christ’s atoning power and grace. It’s not through stickies on the mirror or self-affirmation, imitating others, self-effort alone, or self-fulfillment programs that we change. It comes through the grace of the Atonement, the centerpoint of the gospel plan.
The gospel, then, provides a way for us to return to the home from which we come, but changed, perfected, crowned, glorified with immortal bodies.
So What’s Your Part in the Gospel? Accepting or Rejecting Jesus Christ
Now, you and I have a critical choice to accept or reject this gospel of Jesus Christ—this great gift, including the Savior’s sacrifice. It’s in learning of Him through the Word, through other believers who know Him, through prayer, that you can come to accept His gospel. We’ll be glad to help you if you are on your way to becoming a believer, or have a sense that you are being drawn to Him and to the fullness of His plan for you. Visit us or give us a call to help you on your way. Find some scriptures or request them. Learn of Him. He will reveal Himself to you. You will know, as the scriptures witness:
In the Savior’s words,
I have given unto you my gospel, and this is the gospel which I have given unto you—that I came into the world to do the will of my Father, because my Father sent me. And my Father sent me that I might be lifted up upon the cross; and after that I had been lifted up upon the cross, that I might draw all men unto me. (3 Nephi 27:13-14)
Once you know this is true, and in order to gain the full blessings of the gospel, the Lord says this:
If thou wilt turn unto me, and hearken to my voice and believe, and repent of all thy transgressions, and be baptized, even in water, in the name of mine Only Begotten Son, who is full of grace and truth, which is Jesus Christ, the only name which shall be given under heaven, whereby salvation shall come…, ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost, asking all things in his name, and whatsoever ye shall ask, it shall be given you (Moses 6:52).
That’s how you enter God’s kingdom and full provision of gifts for your eternal growth and blessing. In other words, baptism by one who holds God’s authority is a symbol of your dying to your old self and acceptance of Christ’s new power and life in you. The Holy Ghost is a gift of power and guidance to keep you on the path to reaching your divine potential.
The gospel in this sense operates through an organized body of believers. That organization is the Church, the Savior’s Church; it is the kingdom of God on earth. It is composed of groups of true believers who have come unto Christ and made covenant with him to keep his commandments and live his laws, and it is comprised of those only who have His authority and haven’t taken it upon themselves.
So, the gospel of Jesus Christ is the great unifier of all of us—wherever we are, whoever we are. As children of God, we progress through God’s and Christ’s plan of happiness, or we suffer in restless search of something else to fill the void. I witness that it is the way home.
